An area representative is an individual who works with the UNITED STUDIES staff to locate and interview host families, and maintain contact with schools, students and host families throughout the exchange.
Area Representatives have the opportunity to touch other worlds, outside their own, by becoming an important part of each student's life. Area Representatives also have many opportunities to become involved in their community as they share the UNITED STUDIES Program and bring exciting new students to their area.
Would You Make a Good UNITED STUDIES Area Representative?
UNITED STUDIES is looking for individuals who are interested in leaming about other countries, their people, and their cultures. To be a good area representative, one must possess a genuine concern and love for all people, the ability to communicate effectively and have an interest in meeting and working with new people.
UNITED STUDIES looks for individuals who are involved in their community and show a real desire to promote cultural and educational exchange.
What are the Responsibilities of a UNITED STUDIES Area Representative?
UNITED STUDIES Area Representatives are responsible for things such as host family interviews, school contacts, host family orientations, arrival greetings, welcome orientation, monthly contacts with the students and host families and periodic social activities.
The amount of time devoted to being an area representative is dependent on the number of students you have and the time you wish to invest.
How does an Area Representative Find Host Families?
Host families come from all different areas of life and can be found in many ways. Host families can be found through community gatherings, school functions, churches, friends, etc. The possibilities are endless and all it takes is a little bit of effort on your part to let them know what UNITED STUDIES has to offer.
What if Problems Arise?
UNITED STUDIES Area Representatives are given training on how to deal with problems that may arise. However, if at any time they feel they need assistance dealing with a problem, they can contact the main office. The full time staff at the main office are always happy to assist area representatives in any way.
How are Area Representatives Compensated?
UNITED STUDIES Area Representatives are subcontractors. All area representatives are paid a placement fee for each student placed. This fee should more than cover the expenses incurred by the area representative during the recruitment and interviewing of the host family, as well as making the school contact, notifying the family and student, etc. To combat the expense of contacting the student and family during the year, an area representative receives a supervision fee for each student placed.
Why Should You Become a UNITED STUDIES Area Representative?
Becoming an area representative can be one of the most rewarding decisions you can make. As an area representative you will have the opportunity to touch many lives by being there for each student as they face an exciting and sometimes frightening exchange experience.
Being an area representative is an important role, as area representatives are the life line between the students, their families and the UNITED STUDIES office. You are as important to us as to the student!
Make the decision to become an area representative and you will help the dreams of many young people come true.
