Cadiz and its gorgeous sandy beaches stand surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean. The city is African in appearance and immensely intriguing. The golden cupola of the cathedral looms above low white houses and a cluster of narrow streets open onto charming, small squares. In an hour’s walk around the headlands, you’ll encompass the entire old town and pass through some enchanting parks with fine views of the bay.

The Spanish Language program is a 3-week program designed to increase your knowledge of the Spanish language and culture. The Instituto San Fernando, in collaboration with the Facultad de Filosofia y Letras of the Universidad de Cadiz, offers a complete range of instructional programs focusing on the general or specialized teaching of the Spanish language. Students may also participate in Flamenco classes, and other excursions. Students live with a carefully selected family, attend Spanish language and culture classes, and enjoy tours of historical and famous Spanish cities.

Prerequisite

To be eligible, students must be between the ages of 15 and 18 and have completed at least 1 year of high school Spanish.

The most successful participants are teenagers who are bright, flexible, open-minded, and ready to learn about the world. They should be mature and in good health.

Itinerary

What will my host family be like?

The host families selected for United Studies exchange students are carefully screened. The families are diverse. They may have children of any age, not necessarily teenagers, or they may not have children at all. There may be other relatives living in the home. They may live in urban, suburban, or rural areas, and they may live in an apartment or on a farm. They will have one feature in common - a desire to welcome you into their home and to treat you as a member of the family. Students will be placed with a roommate. If there are an odd number of male or female participants, a student may be placed alone with a family. Students who prefer to live alone with a family may request to do so at an additional charge if available.

What support will I have when I am in the host country?

There is a full-time, on-site director to assist you with concerns that you may have. You should talk with your director about any concerns you have and he/she will look into any concerns and make the appropriate changes.

How much does it cost?

Please contact United Studies for this year's fees.

What does the program fee include?

** Excursions include all transport, hotel (if applicable) and meals.

What does the fee not include?

When do I need to apply?

We encourage all interested students to submit their completed applications as early as possible to ensure that we have sufficient time to match you with an appropriate host family. The deadline to submit an application is May 1. Once received, the application is evaluated based on available space in the program and the merit of the applicant.

What is the application process like?

  1. Read through USSE materials to ensure a thorough understanding of the programs and services offered. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the main office or your a representative for more information.
  2. Select the program in which you wish to participate.
  3. Complete and submit the enclosed application form along with the $50 non-refundable application fee and a $100 deposit.
  4. If your application is accepted, USSE will send you an admission portfolio for you to complete. The forms in the portfolio that an applicant needs to fill out include:
    • a personal profile
    • a request for two letters of recommendation (at least one of which must be from a senior teacher or administrator at your school)
    • a request for a high school transcript
    • a medical form to be completed by your physician
    • a request for photographs
    • an emergency contact form
    • a USSE policy agreement form (for signature)
These forms must be completed and returned to USSE by the deadline noted (usually three weeks after receipt), along with an additional program deposit. In addition, the portfolio will contain information on USSE policies, payment information, and visa requirements. At this point, you should make sure you have a valid passport that will not expire until after you will have completed your outbound program.
  5. A USSE representative will contact you to arrange an interview. The interview will be conducted to review your expectations for the program and to determine your overall capability to fully benefit from an exchange experience. You and your parents will also have the opportunity to ask questions about the program.
  6. After the interview and receipt of the admission portfolio, you will be notified of your official acceptance into the program and of the date and location of your pre-departure orientation session.
  7. Prepare yourself for the experience of a lifetime! Read our briefing materials, attend the pre-departure orientation, get the latest news on your host country, collect photos of your friends and family to take with you, and start packing!
